About Our School

West Vernon Avenue Elementary School is located in South Central Los Angeles just 5 miles south of Downtown Los Angeles.  We are  privileged to be situated in one of Los Angeles' most historical neighborhoods.  We are within walking distance to Exposition Park which houses The Los Angeles Sports Arena, The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, The California Science Center and IMAX Theatre, The Rose Garden, and  The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.  We are also close to the University of Southern California (USC) and work with the department of Education at USC and Troy Camp.  We work with and encourage our families to take advantage of these resources to provide our students with culturally relevant experiences and concepts that students are expected to know by using their cultural knowledge.  We strongly believe that students learn through and remember prior experiences, frames of reference, and unique learning styles relevant and effective for them.

West Vernon Avenue Elementary has proudly served the children of Los Angeles since 1905.  Currently we served over 600 students from Pre-Kinder to Fifth Grades.  Through specialized programs (Ready Set Go!, LA's Best, and EYS) we offer morning and afternoon care for our working parents starting at 6:00 am and closing at 6:00 pm.  We provide counseling services for our students, Mental Health and Social Worker and Psychological counseling, full time nursing services, music and art (visual, dance, and drama) teachers to name a few of our programs.  We provide after school programs in conjunction with Troy Camp from USC ranging from Sports to Performing Arts. During the day we offer three specialized learning centers each geared at specific grade levels, new comer orientation classes for migrant students, as well as several opportunities to attend additional intervention programs hosted on weekends, after-school, and during intercession. Our staff works at providing as many opportunities for early intervention, ongoing support, and enrichment.

West Vernon Ave Elementary strives to expose and educate our students on the use of 21st Century technology that allows them to develop knowledge in the use of, application of, and best practices of technology to access resources that will make them competent, proficient, lifelong learners in an ever-changing technologically driven world.
